WA: Top cop wins ALP preselection for marginal seat
West Australian assistant police commissioner BOB KUCERA has won Labor Party preselection
for a marginal state seat.
The 55-year-old is to contest the Liberal-held seat of Yokine in the next WA poll,
due by May 2001, after a 164-3 vote at the ALP state executive last night.
Mr KUCERA, who's been in the police service for 35 years, says he'll meet Police Commissioner
BARRY MATTHEWS tomorrow to discuss issues relating to his resignation.
He says he's looking forward to the challenge of law making, and will campaign on the
issues of health, education and employment.
He describes running for office as going back on the beat to find out what people want.
To secure Yokine, Mr KUCERA will have to topple KIM HAMES, the minister for housing,
Aboriginal affairs and water resources, who holds the seat with a 3.2 per cent margin.
